NW Washington
Voles could be your problem. Voles are easy to ID by seeing their trails, and they like to hang out in grassy areas. Voles, sometimes called field mice, are easy prey for birds of prey and critters like foxes and coyotes. Even house cats can easily catch them. So encourage predators.

Check this video from the University of Kentucky on vole control. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TQuZhGlMfW4
