MN | Used to be a lot of barley grown up here in WestCentral Minn, every elevator had a Malt and feed bid. If it was 70 plump or more and 13.5 protein or less it was malt, if it didn’t make them grades it was feed….It was just that simple.
Now its variety specific( mostly two row) contract grown, price is set using a percentage of the wheat price, the grower stores it until they want it, and it has to pass more tests to make malt, if it’s feed your S.O.L and have to find a use or buyer. I used to grind it and corn at very low rate in hog rations when are didn’t make malt, the hogs didn’t really care for it at high rates in the feed, and the fiber bogged down the liquid manure system. | |
