Subject: RE: The next generation is tired of growing "poverty grass?"

Mid-Michigan
It's funny how thing somewhat evolve in this business. I can't see how you can possibly make money with 150 bu. corn at these prices. Of course, I can't see how you can make any money with 36 bu. wheat at these prices either. Right now, wheat will probably be my best crop in terms of economic return. I always keep my rotation about the same. I remember years ago when we grew lots of edibles here in michigan. Why? Because we could. They grow well. However, the market really fluctuated back then. Most here went to corn and soybeans, yet the red river valley was very happy to grow 25-30 dollar beans. I can remember my dad saying that $7 corn was not going to be a good thing in the long run. He was right. We now have every Tom, dick and Harry growing corn
The so called "fringe" areas (michigan included). We all do what we have to. But, as I see it, high prices has caused about as many problems as low prices. Wouldn't it be great if a cotton grower could make a living growing cotton? Wouldn't it be great if rice grower could making a living growing rice? As well as other commodities that are area specific? Same for dairy and beef. It's a tough business.
