Most of the cattle guys with the tools and infrastructure have seen this before. We’re definitely not expanding cow numbers. Actually lowering them, because it makes Economic sense to.

We’re expanding infrastructure. (Fence, corrals, water systems, finishing building) and parking profits in feeders we can protect the price on to an extent. We will expand when the market says it makes sense.

$5k plus cows are hard to make sense. Honestly it’s hard to not take an old cow to the sale barn for almost any reason in today’s environment.

By the numbers, took an old cow that I bought as a heavy bred winter of 18/19, paid $1000 for her, got 7 calves out of her, sold her for $2500 give or take.

The other side of that coin, pay $5500, hope to get 10? Calves. Not figuring any feat loss, early culls etc. that’s $550 a calf just in the cow, roughly $600/yr to feed/graze her, 150/yr for vet/ai/bull (probably low), now you have $1300 in a calf. Start adding in machinery, vehicles, culls, death loss etc. even if the markets don’t move down a lot, I don’t see a way to make a profit.
