Even in my lifetime, there's areas that i remember farming through 20 years ago that are now all cattails and water. The wet cycle returning after 2009 has done a lot of damage, and i firmly believe the trend to minimum and no-till has only made those problems worse
Curious what part of ND are you in? Here we consider the wet cycle to have started in the early 90s, big time in 93. There have been a few seasons in the past 10 years that have been nice and dry, 2016 and especially 2017, which is the year we planted almost every single slough, and also 2021 was a good year for us. Those years we plant and harvest straight through on that crap land is some our best crops and efficient farming, I then know what the RRV guys experience every year! The map I’ve posted is an example of some of our worst ground on a wetter, or I guess anymore, “normal” year. This is a half section that has had as few as 150acres planted to as much as 98% of it in 2017, boy was that fun!
