Cambridge, southwestern Nebraska | Ah…a guy that understands later planted corn.
Have it small during the brutal July heat. Pollinate during shorter days and longer nights and less heat in August then have a slow grain fill in September. Yes, harvest can be a little later. And I know it doesn’t work for everyone.
Last year early May non irrigated corn was in the 50-75 bu range. Late May early June corn went 100-170 consistently. That might be a little exceptional but definitely is the trend.
Like you said, it comes up fast and with enough moisture never looks back. And during its peak water demand in August instead of July like earlier planted corn, those longer nights allow the plant to recharge sugars instead of burning itself up. |
