The greatest miracle in agriculture isn't 300-bushel corn. It's the ability to cash a government check with one hand while pointing at somebody else and yelling "socialist" with the other.
One reason its so hard for beginning & small farmers. Gov't payments,especially ad hoc ones should imho be targeted at those in need or trouble When its paid across the board on per acre basis or production the $$ allows the larger farms to use the $$ too outbid the "struggling or smaller farmer" .In Canada we had NISA ,now Agri Invest which offers matching $$ based on gross margins.(capped at $10k per yr.)
Short story is how does any Gov't justify sending subsidy $$ to Farms with $10-50 maybe $100 mil in equity .As farmers we have been pretty lucky with safety net programs, ect. compared to say a local auto mechanic running a garage
