Cousin was a commercial pilot back then. He took his Dad and me on a tour of the flooding on July 4 that year. Crossed the river at Alton and went to Ottumwa. We landed in Des Moines just after they shut the city down due to the water works flooding. All restaurants were closed. Some outfit brought ready made sandwiches to the airport. I think they were supposed to have a F1 race that day but was canceled. It was the biggest mess I had ever seen. We went up to Ames then headed southeast towards IL. Shortly after crossing the river again crops looked fine.
