I quit farming full time back in 2003 to go to school to become a pastor. While going to Bible college I got my contractor's license and worked as a self employed carpenter while finishing college and taking seminary classes. I still do a few carpentry jobs now and then. Eventually, I became a full time pastor until I had a chance to start a new church. That meant I had to be multi-vocational. I had installed drainage tile when I was still farming and had even installed some with my brother during my vacation time when I was a full time pastor, so when I needed another job while pastoring, I started installing more drain tile and doing some small excavating work. Since this is a part time gig, I take on some of the smaller tile and excavating jobs. I love it because it allows me to get back out in the field and play in the dirt. We live in town, but have a small hobby farm just outside of town where I can plant some sweet corn and some field corn for the hogs and chickens. So technically, I have not completely quit farming, but I also cannot say I am always going to be gainfully employed as a farmer- I guess things really haven't changed much, it is just on a MUCH smaller scale now.
