What if it didn't cost more? Using my numbers from N on corn ground this year. Total cost of N applied $561.80/ha 1 bag of corn seed plants 1 ha I would be ahead if the seed allowed N to be fixed instead of buying it if cost of bag was $500 more AND it would be better for the environment instead of all the emissions from manufacturing and transporting the N
$ are Can
Absolutely, there would be some environmental benefits
But are we really changing anything? You're less dependent on your nitrogen retailer, but now you're just as dependent on this genetic to work for you and your seed dealer. You're still hooked to the same leash. It's just a different coller.
And you know that the seed company absolutely knows the savings that their genetic would bring to the farmer and they're going to price accordically so the farmer would not be any more profitable.
The only difference is if you're buying nitrogen as a component, you can control your expense there. If you're paying the premium for a genetic, you can't apply less genetic and you still might need to buy some nitrogen
I don't know to me if the cost of inputs is a concern I would do something to reduce my dependency on that input
