Pittsburg, Kansas | Glucose tolerance test along with a fasting insulin test.
But the fasting insulin will give a person a pretty good idea. It can be done with the normal blood draw but a person needs to be fasted for about 12 hours before. Which really is not a problem as if you quit eating by 8pm and don't get blood drawn before 8am you are good.
Depending on the lab they will call anything under 20 or 25 "normal" but anything over single digits is not optimal
What the insulin test level tells a person is how insulin resistant a person is by how hard the pancreas beta cells are having to work to keep blood sugar levels in check. The higher the fasted level means some cells are insulin resistant and it is taking higher amounts of insulin to keep blood sugar levels in check.
Knowing your fasting insulin levels are high but blood sugar still normal means you are headed for trouble down the road as the insulin resistance gets worse. First pre diabetes, then eventually over time diabetes.
Lifestyle changes can reverse the process. The best lifestyle change is to reduce eating the foods that causes insulin to raise. There are some others that can help also like intermittent fasting or time restriction eating.
But what would I know. No MD after my name. | |
