Nebraska aka the boondocks | Lots of folks have opinions on droughts. Here is mine, speaking as someone who was sitting in d4, and had .30 in six months. This was the driest ever coming into planting. Gravity irrigated ground on ridge till had half a stand, or rather half germinated. and then came three “just in the nick of time” rains. Those are like a few days later than just in time rains. Last night another half to an inch. At this point things actually look decent. Now, are the reservoirs and groundwater drying up, yes. But the market could care less. Have people already used a year of irrigation on some pivots , yes. But again the market doesn’t care. The odds are we will probably skip through the minefield again to live another day, but depleted. Now, if you are talking pasture and alfalfa in the west, that is a different tune, there is a lot of concern there. But not as bad as a month ago. The overall trend here has been drier and warmer winters, no moisture til almost May and then it rains all summer and shuts of October. Some may call that perfect, unless you like to ski, or have reservoir lakes and first groundwater |
