Pittsburg, Kansas | We carry a paper Atlas when we travel.
GPS is great, but to get an overall look at direction of travel you have to zoom out. When you zoom out, all the smaller roads, towns and details disappear. A big paper map is just so much easier to make more detailed plans.
As long as a person just wants to get from a to b the fastest way, gps is usually fine. But if a person wants to take back roads and explore, it becomes more difficult. That is where a paper map is useful.
My motorcycle specific GPS has a feature that would be useful for car GPS. I can tell it on a 1 to 4 scale how "adventurous" ride I want. 1 being like a car, fastest easy route. 4 being including dirt trails. With 2 and 3 being highway but more adventurous roads off the interstate. We use 2 and 3 quite a bit.
