You set up a computer to do some complex math problem.

As correct answers are discovered, you get a new coin.

But it becomes more difficult to find the next correct answer.

The last correct answer or two are so hard to find they might not ever be found.

This is why bitcoins are comparable to gold.

Limited supply.
Finding more becomes more time consuming and costly.

Of course we know physical gold and some electronic code isn’t the same, but… they use computer calculations to mimic discovering more gold.

Using faster computers lets you search for the right answers in less time. They figured out the same processors that manage the graphics of your computer, tv, video game is the best for searching bitcoin. And so for a time it was difficult to get better video, as the chips were being used by bitcoin miners.

Early on any old computer sitting in the background could cough up a coin now and then. Now, even the best fastest designed computer struggles to ever find a new coin.
