Brazos Valley | To answer your questions everything has changed. Quality, price, components, refrigerant, etc.
You don’t mention what your existing heat source is (gas, electric, heat pump, boiler, etc). If you have a gas system you can go to a heat pump with a gas furnace backup which is probably the best combination for heating out there. If you had straight electric before you can go to a heat pump and you will gain savings in heat mode when outdoor temps are above 35 but you will want to strictly use strip heats lower than that.
System efficiencies have changed a lot. If you don’t plan on having your duct system evaluated or replaced stick with a single stage system to best match what you had. Going to an inverter compressor and variable speed blower can cause issues if the duct system isn’t made to match. Essentially what happens is the unit will run at 40% capacity and on a poor duct system the rooms farthest from the indoor unit will not get enough air until the unit ramps to 100%, at that point you’ve lost the savings you were supposed to get.
Also if you have unreliable power I would shy aware from inverters as they are quite expensive to repair and fail fast with flickers and surges.
Stay away from Lennox made products.

The old 2.5 ton unit was 22 years old and worked fine until the compressor went out. What has changed in that time. I hear heat pumps work well. Variable cooling? Quiet? Side Discharge? Would like quiet and efficient. |
