North Central Indiana | Well if they had the ability to invest it all instead of keep the business going then that sounds like a great thought. If they didn’t have the business they wouldn’t get the money so that’s also a moot point. I do know one thing for sure, my net worth along with most other farmers is considerably higher because of farming than it would be otherwise. Will I ever recognize the value? Probably not, I don’t foresee selling. Does it allow me to see my own schedule and generally live a comfortable and enjoyable life? It does. Family story, when my parents were young they had a cousin stay at the house for a weekend. She was shocked when they were up and at it early Saturday morning working. Story goes she seriously asked “why do you have to work on a Saturday?” The story continues after she leaves from the weekend and the farm side of the family is talking about it and someone said “you didn’t tell her we can just not show up whenever we decide to did you?” There’s always someone around to do chores during the offseason. The old guard now spends about 5 months every year between Florida, Arizona and the Upper Peninsula. None of them are retirement age. Grandparents are usually around home, but they’re deep in their 80s and prefer it that way. Sure someone would likely be just as well off had they gone a different career route, but all of them being as well off is a pretty big stretch | |
