I haven’t ever taken any of the handouts so the answer to your first question is yes. Not that the net worth of my operation would be impressive to most people, but at least I earned what I have. You are asking the right questions, although the more you look into it the more depressing it becomes. Unfortunately most people are only out to get whatever they can however they can.
