Floyd County, Iowa | Had something similar a few years ago. Got up on Sunday morning and looked out the living room window to see how much snow fell over night. About an inch. But there were foot prints in the snow coming in our driveway, up to the front porch (but not to the door), then back out the driveway. I went out through the garage and opened the door to look out. There at the end of our driveway was a girl, about 17 or so, without a coat hiding behind the tree, visible from the garage, but not from the west, where she came from and where she was looking.
I asked her if she was OK and what was going on. She was shaking and looked like maybe she had been crying, said she had called her mom to come pick her up. She lived in the next town, about 8 miles west of us. Had her come in my heated shop to warm up and went in the house to get my wife out there. Didn't want to be alone with her, for obvious reasons. I asked her where she came from, and she said from the rental place just west of us about 1/8 mile. When asked where her coat was, she said it was there but wasn't going after it. She just wanted to get away and stay away from there. Wouldn't tell us what happened, but could sorta guess.
The place next door gets rented out to some pretty unsavory people now. Used to be good folks live there, but the guy that owns it has ran off all the good renters by being a jerk. These renters were a couple of 18 year olds that were fresh out on their own. Lots of traffic coming and going about every half hour, mostly at night. Typical boar's nest there. They wanted a bonfire for a party one rainy Saturday, so piled up a bunch of brush and wood, set a gas can in it, and a container of tannerite. I thought the house blew up when they lit that off with a rifle. Shook our house pretty bad. That's the type of renters they get there now.
Anyway, the girl's mom pulled in our driveway, the girl went out and got in the car, mom backed out and they left. No thank you from mom, just a grumpy looking scowl as she backed out. In retrospect, I wish I'd called the sheriff. | |
