Cambridge, southwestern Nebraska | Yes, I would have. Very tough to open that door in the middle of the night not knowing what to expect. Security cameras help that some.
Once you know they are not there to harm you then things go better.
Had a similar thing happen a few years ago. Heard a vehicle turn around in our driveway at 5 am which was odd. Heard it go north on a minimum maintenance road which was odd because I knew the roads were muddy to impossible to be on. I actually got up to see he hadn’t parked nearby.
Anyway, at 9:00 am a kid shows up. He got stuck a couple miles up the road and walked back. Wants to use a phone. I let him use mine. No one answers. Asks for a ride to town 10 miles away. I was slightly reluctant but didn’t want him on my front porch either. He was young. Likely intoxicated. On the way to town I asked why he was on the back roads. He said he wanted to stay off the highway. (Likely drunk). There was some risk as he could have had a knife or gun but I didn’t want him around my family either. Sheriffs department would have taken awhile to get there.
I dropped him off in town and never saw him again.
I did report the situation to the Sheriff.
