With the way the world is, these decisions are getting harder. Quite a few years ago I was planting real late because it was supposed to rain. Well, I got rained out about 2 or 3 in the morning. My seed tender didn't have a cover so I was trucking down the highway with my pickup, wipers on high, to get it and take it home. As I was going down the highway I thought I saw someone walking on the other shoulder (wasn't positive because it was raining hard). I hooked up to the tender and as I headed home, slower, I was watching closely. Sure enough, there's someone walking down the highway. I stopped, it was a young girl and under the circumstances, I asked if she needed a ride. She jumped in, soaking wet, and said she had gotten into a fight with her parents and was walking to Brookings from a near-by town. I asked her to use my phone to call them to let them know she was OK, but she wouldn't. I ran the pickup and tender in the shed and then took her to town and dropped her off where she wanted, Walmart. Probably stupid of me, but couldn't just leave her walking down the highway in the rain. Asked her if she needed some money (another stupid thing to do) and she said nope, she had enough for a hotel room. She appeared to be a well-mannered young girl. I always wonder how life turned out for her.

And then there's the other late-night events. Like late last fall a drunk went off the road and got high-centered on my driveway, trying to get back on the road with his 3/4ton crew cab. I guess it doesn't matter how powerful your diesel is if the tires aren't on the ground! :-) It's a little spooky when someone's banging on your door in the middle of the night. I've got several more late-night stories. I always think that I'd want someone to help me if I needed it but anymore, there is risk. You did well Chuck.
