Lancaster, UK | Hi everyone,
I apologize in advance if this type of post is not welcome.
My name is Quentin Herzig, and I am a PhD researcher in the UK, but I am from the Chicago area and went to school in Champaign. I work on making genetically modified plants with (hopefully!) improve photosynthesis, heat tolerance and yield. We are doing this by transferring genes from desert dwelling plants in the mustard family to temperate crops in the mustard family like Camelina and Broccoli. Hoping to expand to other crops in the future, particularly wheat.
However, the goals outlined above of this research are based on what researchers like myself assume farmers want, and I do not come from a farming background. I signed up to this forum because I'd like to open a dialogue to better understand what farmers actually want out of genetically engineered traits, so I can align more closely with what would be most useful to you in my future work.
Please let me know your thoughts on what traits are in demand, what I am doing now, and how myself and other researchers can better understand farmers needs!
Thank you for reading,
Quentin | |
