Central Coast, California | When I was going to college the schools farm was under fire because there was a nearby creek that had nitrates much higher than allowed . It was mostly blamed on the dairy and some on the hog barns. The admin forced them to quit hauling manure to the silage field and made them irrigate with fresh water not the wash water. No fertilizer allowed. After five years nothing had gotten better and somebody had an idea to look at the sports field which were across the creek from the dairy. Low and behold there.was more nitrogen going onto the 4 soccer fields. The scheel paid millions to put in astroturf and the problem went away. Of course the dairy didn't get to go back to hauling manure but at least now they know... |
