Here is some low fruit.

Our economy and government bureaucracy is run by mandarins.  Increasing numbers of certifications and licenses required to do just regular ordinary old work.  You need a two- year training program or associates degree to cut hair in Iowa.  Is this in the public interest, or just a barrier to entry for new barbers to compete in Iowa?  I think most of us can agree that is unnecessary and not in the public interest.

Unlimited corporate money in politics, courtesy of Citizens United, is apparently consistent with the First Amendment according to the Supreme Court, but I think a majority would agree it is bad for America and if we held a nationwide referendum the voters would reinforce that position.

There is a bunch of stuff that is just plain not controversial to the Everyman, it just gets done in back rooms in statehouses and executive branch meeting rooms.  You can bury your head in the sand if you want, that is your right.

Standard Oil is a textbook case of technological progress bringing advantages and then using that power to buy off Congress and regulators to allow them to accumulate more market power and squeeze out competitors.

I was taught that our economy was based on limited laissez-faire capitalism.  Some limits.  Not a lot of limits.

ETA: the people who get to decide will be the people who not only can see that parts of the system need reform but also can convince a critical mass of people to support and follow that cause.  Right now we have a lot of ‘tear down the system’ rhetoric because many of the shortcomings are readily apparent.  We don’t have a lot of realistic ‘this is what should replace it’ in the public dialogue.  Would sure be nice and helpful to get more to that side of the discussion.
