How ignorant does one need to be to not understand that that's what they trained their entire lives to do. Crunch numbers for the rest of us. That's what they did. They're not the ones guarding. The hen house is in your analogy.
I absolutely believe there should be oversight in government spending. But cutting spending in a blank fashion like Doge did only destroyed things. It didn't help anything.
Allowing people to starve because some other people taking money from the same organization are committing fraud is not justification to cut the entire program. You still need to feed the starving folks. Scalpels worked better than hatchets.
Do you understand how one could hold those three separate opinions?
