Near Intersection of I-35 & I-90 Southern Mn. | I have not seen a proximity sensor mounted like that but it should work fine. The proximity sensor needs to sense metal followed by a gap of no metal.
This arrangement should work fine in that respect. Sensing off of a sprocket generally doesn't work well since there isn't enough of a well defined distinct gap between the teeth.
Raven made a sensing wheel to attach to a 1" shaft with a set screw. It was referred to as a "Ninja Wheel". It had areas of metal followed by a gap of the same size to create the alternation between metal and non metal.
I have seen the sensor as shown in your picture mounted near a LoveJoy coupler. That worked because the LoveJoy coupler consists of metal areas followed by rubber areas thus producing the metal to non metal alternation.
