I didn't want to hijack the thread below...but does anyone have advice on the best way to clean contacts after a cell goes bad? They're often called "alkaline," so you would assume you'd use something acidic? But acids are corrosive, and the contact points are already corroded.

As an aside, why are AA the worst for going bad? I can't remember the last time a C cell leaked. And, of course, the new flashlights that appear to use C cells are packed with little AAs. :-(

A Q tip soaked with grocery store white vinegar will melt that nasty alkaline corrosion like sugar in water,, Contacts usually come back clean and corrosion free, although a bit of dry hand polishing cant hurt.
Flush the battery box while opening down with a water spritzer bottle. shake it dry, blow it dry with computer air, and let it dry in a warm place for hours before installing batteries.
I will only use single use Energizer ultimate Lithium AA cells, I have never had one leak and they last a long time. Reasonably priced when bought in the 18 pack at Sams club.
