Subject: Church vs. Pizza Joint

Hastings, Florida

Disclaimer -- I do not attend this 100 year old  church, wife does, and my great -grandfather was first pastor. Attended as child.
Our little town hit hard times, lost many businesses , not as many farm jobs, etc. About 5 years ago, new outside business owners saw opportunities and started moving in, one was turn a large 2 story home into a nice family type pizza and ice cream establishment. Did a good business, all take out. He sold it to another out-of -towner , who paid a huge amount for it. New owner put outside tables in back , expanded menu, and surprised everyone by posting a county zoning variance request sign, requesting permission to sell beer with meals. . The problem ? Pizza place is across street  from town's largest church, Baptist. Less than 70 feet from church side door to outside tables, front door less than 100. The church was not consulted before the sign was put up. No chance to try and compromise as to times beer served, possibly putting up fence , etc.  Went before County Zoning Board who approved the beer sales 3 to 2. Problem is, our County ordinance says no beer sold for consumption within 1,000 feet of church, this was certainly less then that. Law been on books for a long time. Church vigorously appealed to County Commissioners, who unanimously overturned the Board , denying the permit to sell alcohol. This church is finishing up a new building, a donation from a member of nearly 1 and a half million, dedicated to help our local youth. About 100 feet from  the pizza place. The pizza owner has not been friendly in talks with church I am told, says economically he needs the business.
All the old citizens support the church, new folks and outsiders say let him sell beer.
I consider the way it was handled to be a slap in the face to the church, so I support their effort.
   Your thoughts ?
