I have not been to Europe like the OP is suggesting.
Cash is most certainly not obsolete in Mexico. Exchange rate varies wildly from store to store and may not be the same for cash vs credit purchases. Peso is king in Mexico - some of the more touristy places take credit but everyone takes cash.
