I agree. We don't have enough information as to everything that happened at the door to condemn the dog.
Might or might not be the dog's fault, but if the dog was fine a little while later, I doubt it is a vicious dog. He said the kids were all excited to see them, so that may have triggered the dog's reaction. What was he doing with his hand that it was in range of the dog to "bite"?
