Eastern NE KS | I think you are looking at max bid incorrectly. It is not a tool to save you time, AND achieve a significant bargain below your maximum.
Instead, max bid is what a buyer is willing to pay and save bidding effort (time). I placed max bids thinking this way because I was at my day job and couldn't attend to auction. I won a few, but mostly the item went for higher bid from other folks.
I also think max bid is a tool used by the auction to create an illusion of an exciting bidding environment. But they may jump directly to a max bid to move the bidding quickly to market value. In both cases I was willing to pay my max bid and expected nothing less.
