Having run that area many times,Hit I-90.Take it all the way to Worcester (woostah) Mass,drop down to RI on rte 146.This will keep you out of 95% of traffic issues.Tolls though.If you like traffic hit NYC then up I-95,shorter but you will pull any hair you have out unless after 10 pm.There is the countries oldest burger joint in New haven CT,,do not go in there after dark.
