The way I read this is: "we have 17 things to be divided across two loads....."

If he meant 17 things on each load, it should read: "We have 2 loads with 17 items (or things) on each load, and they sold for $25 apiece."     That would have been more clearly stated this situation.

As I read this thread, the equation being asked about in the original post does not clearly state the situation.  

As far as how to do the math, the way the equation was stated, the correct answer is 442.  IF the correct answer was "850", then the equation should have been stated differently. 

It seems to me that there are people who were asleep in high school math class, and they should go back to school and take a remedial math class. And probably a remedial class in writing English as well. :)
