I know what you’re saying, my son was 5 when I married his mother and I always told him the only steps in our house went to the basement. Refer to him as my son in every introduction but his dad made it clear I was never to be called “Dad” which was fine and we all get along really well.
My ex wife's son had just turned three when we met. We were together 16 years. Got this from my son a few years ago -
