Strip tilling will let you reduce your P & K fertilizer rates by 1/3 to 1/2 depending on your soils. Confirmed by U of MN in southern MN ridgetill years ago. Go in with reduced P & K in early spring with a coulter type unit. If you can get it in early enough you can put fulll rate (0.8-1.0 lb of N per bu expected yield) along with reduced rate P & K in the spring strip or if stripping closer to planting put down 1/3 of N (0.3 lb N per bu) with the reduced P & K and side dress the rest of N later. I've seen it work nicely.
Banding fertilizer is the way to go to save $$ without hurting yields, just less waste of fertilizer and less N in your family water well..
Be careful with fall strips unless you are on very flat ground. They will erode on about any slope.
I think the strip till/side dress combo would be my ideal set up. Accomplishes better fertilizer placement and better fertilizer timing. Just gotta figure out what strip till set up makes the most sense and the logistics.
I have a new and used ZML 12 row that easily replaces the shank with double Vortex coulter unit with a built in fertilizer boot. Just what you’re looking for, best of both worlds.
