Malta, Illinois | My impression is that most people did not really understand the purpose of this trip. There was a lot of speculation in the media and online about trade negotiations and deals to be made. Did Trump or someone with the government really say that the purpose of this trip was to secure trade deals? Maybe they did but I really can't say that I recall that. I think the purpose was more for both sides to feel each other out and see if there is the potential for any kind of relationship. From the comments made during and after it sounds like both sides will consider trying to work together but on a very guarded basis. I imagine the scope of the trip changed considerably after the start of the Iran war. Taiwan is China's primary focus right now along with opening the Strait of Hormuz. Given everything else that is going on I think trade deals with China are a long way off. I can't really fault Trump for lack of results on his China trip. | |
