I don’t agree with the competition. The money actually takes that away. Public school teachers get paid less or at best get minimal increases in salaries. There are some families just not able to afford the privates tuitions. So it becomes a rich kids school or one who has a skill to offer that’s appealing to the private.
Actually, teachers' salaries in Iowa are quite comparable between private and public schools, although the starting salaries are a fair amount higher in public schools. The voucher system allows families with even a median income to opt out of public schools and explore other options. As far as talent, I agree that private schools do offer tuition breaks for students who may be gifted or talented. But for k-6 kids, it's quite rare. I imagine there are families who can't afford private schools...but if public education is as good as you're inferring, then it shouldn't be a problem. |
