NW Iowa | I see your point, but inputs the last several yrs for corn here have not been high.
They are high now, because of oil, which in turn is increasing commodity price.
Inputs for cows have been cheap.
I bought 20% Alfalfa couple months ago for $80 ton delivered because it was cheap. Just put it in under roof.
Silage has been cheap last couple yrs also because of cheap corn. Dry lotting cows is almost as cheap as pasture at $1.75 all in.
Clearing $2000 head on calves in Dec '25 is some of the best I have ever seen.
I've ran cows for 26 yrs now.
I also charge myself $300 for pasture rent.
Edit- SDRP payment last Aug was the same as now.
Last AUG NH3 was $710 a ton. Map was around 845. K was 425
Corn was $3.92 oct delivery at E plant.
bred hiefers 3800-4100
yr before hiefers 2675-2900
DDg last fall $140 and this spring $150 ton
DDg now $170 ton
Corn now $4.50 at E plant
They only path to cheap inputs is cheap oil. Having more ethanol sold will bring oil down
