Subject: RE: Statin

UP / Thumb of Michigan
I'm part of the 1% (give or take 20%) who have trouble with statins. I may not have taken the "right" one I guess, but I did try 4 or 5 of them. Same outcome.

I have absolutely no doubt that high cholesterol is a killer. Lost a lot of relatives to the aftereffects of it. Needs to be addressed. No argument from me- EXCEPT- I once told my wife that if I had to continue with the constant pain statins gave me, it wasn't worth it. Let me clog up and die in peace from high cholesterol like the rest of my family, because I didn't think I wanted to live the rest of my life in that much pain. Not discomfort, not a little off today- real pain.

Very happy I was able to get a prescription for Rapatha, and now Praluent. Its lowering my cholesterol, and only side effect to date is the price. Its working, so alls good.

On a different note- my FIL had a genetic heart issue repaired a couple years ago. 88 years old, thought the procedure may lay him up for a few weeks. So, he dashed around and repaired a roof by himself, and also cleared a bunch of brush that was bothering him. Rebuilt the fence around his garden. He can work like someone half his age. Gets the procedure done, everything works out fine. A week later, he starts feeling sore. A week later, he can't get his shoes tied by himself. Wife heads over to see him, goes through his med list. Dr has him on statins, but his cholesterol is only slightly elevated. My wife tells him to stop taking it, see what happens. 10 days later he's back doing all the stuff a healthy 35 year old can do. Asks the DR at his follow up visit why he was prescribed a statin. Preventative measures is what the Dr told him.

I do believe that there are some preventative measures we can all do to hopefully keep us healthy. Not sure I see the merit in prescribing a statin to a 88 year old patient who will very likely die from something not at all cholesterol related someday. We just celebrated his 90th birthday, and he's not slowing down much yet.
