High beef prices have no doubt hurt demand with some people but so has the higher cost of just about everything else. I think to some extent beef is just getting caught in the crossfire but in the long run people are going to buy less beef especially steak cuts. As someone pointed out, you can still make a pretty economical meal using a pound of ground beef. We don't eat much beef anymore. I just kind of lost my taste for it and so has my wife. Being a former pork producer we still eat a lot of pork and a fair amount of chicken and fish. We still eat a fair amount of ground beef but little to no steak. I still really enjoy a good old fashioned pot roast. If I were to decide to splurge and go somewhere for a steak it certainly would not be Texas Roadhouse or any other chain. There are plenty of local establishments that serve great steaks. At some point with everything costing more including, food, gas, electricity, insurance, taxes, and on and on, the consumer is going to have to make some decisions. Cutting out more expensive food options is a pretty easy place for people to start cutting. I guess I don't get the obsession people on this site have with Starbucks. As someone who does not drink coffee the idea of Starbucks and their high priced coffee is a bit hard for me to comprehend but I probably have habits that those people would think are silly too. There is a Starbucks next to our bank. My wife went into the bank a couple of weeks ago and I waited in the car. Apparently everyone uses the drive thru when they go to Starbucks. The line must of have 20 cars in it while there was no one inside. If you really wanted a coffee why would you not park your car, walk in, and get your coffee in a fraction of the time it takes to wait in that line? But I digress. What I noticed was that the predominant vehicles in the line were late model subs. Most being driven by women. I don't think the people that are wasting money on Starbucks coffee are the poor and those who are struggling to pay their bills. Some of the young women in that line driving Tahoes and other gas guzzlers have a much bigger problem. The cost to fill that thing at the pump.
