Near Intersection of I-35 & I-90 Southern Mn.
Had to laugh when I heard your definition of Expert coming from Down Under. I've heard the term here and it often correctly describes the situation.

My limited experience with case drains has been with row crop planters and farm tractors. On those at least, the case drain must provide a zero resistance path back to the reservoir. The quantity of oil with them is fairly small but the path must not have any restriction.

It appears from the picture that the two larger hoses (pressure and return) have a tee between them with a check valve. In normal operation the check valve blocks the pressure from going to the return so it all goes to the motor. When the pressure is stopped, the motor can free wheel and the oil just runs around in circles back to the motor until it coasts to a stop. This also prevents problems if the hoses get reversed since then the return and pressure hoses would be swapped but the check valve would just allow the oil to circulate back to the source. The orbit motor would not turn but there would be no damage. This is the plumbing arrangement that is used with my Nephew manure wagon.

I have no idea what that "extra" small hose is for on the right.
