Faunsdale, AL | Have welded a couple of 1-1/4” square gang bolts. When disk is down and you can’t wait on one to ship, the decision is pretty simple.
That being said I remember as a child watching the local welding shop try to straighten one at the weld and it kept snapping, so it can be impossible or maybe it would have been ok if they hadn’t needed to straighten it. I don’t really know.
I just bevel the ends and lay both sections in a piece of angle iron and start welding alternate sides with short beads to keep it straight. As you fill the V, keeping it straight is easier and you can weld longer beads.
Chipping flux, wire brushing and even grinding helps to make sure the weld has no inclusions or porosity. Might take me 1/2 hour start to finish and that’s ok. The only preheat was done by the torch beveling process followed by grinding away slag before starting the weld.
I used 7018 rods and even bought a new container in honor of the stressed nature of the repaired part. My rod storage is not really adequate to keep rods dry long term.
So, in summary, I would try it. | |
