Iowa | I think we’re seeing the beginning of big changes in ag. In the 70’s farmers began to realize soil wasn’t replaceable and the idea of “conservation tillage” became popular. This generation of farmers owned the ground or had close connections to the owner so it was important. Today (really in the last 10 years) farm size has exploded, land ownership has moved away from farmers towards investors, absentee landlords do not see dirt blow - so now if you’re farming x thousand acres conservation is not important to you, the end goal is profit. This is a management choice as here you can see these fields from 10 miles away, and see the dirt in the ditch. It’s too bad, but it’s probably the way of the future as land ownership becomes only an investment too, and farming is not a way of life, but strictly a business venture. | |
