Hey everybody. I’m 16 years old and this is going to be my first crop season. I hope anyway.

My grandpa has a 20 acre field he’s letting me farm on my own this year. It didn’t get fertilizer on it last fall so I think he’s letting me mess around with it because he doesn’t want to pay higher prices for nitrogen this spring.

My question is what do I plant? My dad and grandpa haven’t grown anything but corn since at least the early 90s. I guess my great grandpa used to plant oats and alfalfa for feed when he had cattle but there’s been no livestock on the farm since he passed.

The “rotation” has basically been corn, rip, plant and repeat for the last 35 years. I really want to plant soybeans or something but I’d have to hire everything done because there is no planting/harvesting equipment for soybeans here and I know they’d never let me use the sprayer for 20 acres.

Could I spread soybeans on with a fertilizer cart and gently work them in? What other options are there? The local market really only supports corn and soybeans but I’m willing to give anything a try. Thanks
