The federal government has been going to the cloud for a while. The companies, Google, Microsoft, Amazon, etc. convinced the government to back up data and rewrite programs to run in the cloud. Even the Pentagon went to cloud and this happened years ago. Some of the Pentagon used Google docs, spreadsheets, gmail, etc. They told Google to listen in. If you do not believe do some word searches and you will find the information I am talking about. The nice thing about the cloud is that a company or agency does not have to keep up with new hardware as servers. Over 20 years ago, the agency I was working with said that this would be the last server they would probably buy. So something was going to replace the IBM server. That means that they let several FTEs go that worked in IT.

I was told by my supervisor several years ago that the cost of data storage in the cloud was nothing. His words.

There are nice things about using a browser and using the cloud to download the newest version to your browser. This is easier than getting people to update apps or programs on their computers.
