Holly Hill, SC | I am in the same boat. Looking to have an excellent crop until this 6 or 7 week drought. I just got 1.2 inches of rain this past weekend. Half my wheat was brown to the top although kernels still full of moisture. Not sure if the rain will help fill this out or not. Once flag leaf is brown can the kernel take on any moisture/nutrients? Not sure how it is going to mature out. In the same field some might be ready next week and some ready in 4 weeks. I am definitely going to harvest my wheat then plant soybeans (maybe cotton).
Might be a mistake but I decided not to grow cotton this year (same as last year). If price gets up to 90 cents might grow some after wheat harvest although this later date would be setting myself up for lower yield. I still have a 9996 basket picker which means I need at least 3 of us to harvest at about the same time as harvesting soybeans. With only 3 of us running the farm, cotton has to be worth the trouble. | |
