I hear about some regular guys(not directly related to or affiliated with a packer) that own quite a few hogs in barns across the country. My thought is if they can own the hogs and never touch them while still paying $41/space, there must be some profit in owning them? Just wasn’t sure if this was a 500, 5,000, or 50,000 head situation to be able to get contracts.
It might be tough to get a delivery contract with a packer for 500 head but you could absolutely get a delivery contract for 5000 hd/year.
Now the thing about a delivery contract with a packer is that you better have a good supply of pigs and be able to deliver the hogs when you said you would deliver them. Otherwise you will be buying your way out of the contract.
