SE SD | Yep. Pork, poultry, & dairy all the money is in owning the critter from start to end. Seems like the niche pork to plate, chicken/egg to plate, and dairy cow to plate is the only way to start in those industries from scratch & maintain your independence sort of like the old days. OR provide a sales or service to those who already own barns. Repair, equipment sales, washing, hauling, manure management, etc. There was an Act of Congress many moons ago called the Stockyards & Meat Packers Act which by my understanding was put into place to prevent what has happened. It basically said you can be a producer or a processor, but you can't be both to prevent monopolies. Well...over time the government said to hell with that we like monopolies and here we sit. Now how do you put the toothpaste back in the tube? I would personally break them up into the tiniest of pieces in the name of "National Security" since most are foreign owned anyway. The bits and pieces can be bid on and bought by ONLY young and beginning farmers or those who have been farming less than 10 years which would maybe reinvigorated interest in rural America again. Something along those lines would be my solution if I had any input. I do not though & the ship has sailed. Hopefully someone else someday has better ideas. | |
