There are two main forms of energy the body uses, with three categories of macronutrients.

Carbohydrates, fat and protein. Protein is mainly a building block and the body puts it very low on priority list to use as energy.

So fats and carbohydrates are the main energy sources for the body. We have been taught to fear fat for the last 50 years which in my opinion was a grave mistake.

When you cut out most of the carbohydrates, the body will need to depend more on fat for its energy source. That energy source can come from food and or energy stored up as fat on the body.

To get in fat burning mode insulin needs to be low. To lower body insulin levels cut out most of the food that raises insulin. Namely carbohydrates.

High insulin equals glucose burning mode and fat storage mode. To get in fat burning mode, lower insulin by cutting out most carbohydrates.

Those are the basic mechanics. Proper application determines success. Once the body becomes adjusted to utilizing fat burning mode it will get the majority of energy from fat sources. Takes a few weeks to months to get fat adapted if a person is insulin resistant.

I am not a doctor nor nutritionist. Just my opinion. I am wrong a lot.
