A friend of mine has an older AC riding mower that has a roller and it works well, probably just the adjustment as has been mentioned. My Grasshopper just has a piece of rubber belting bracketed at the rear of the deck and it has worked well for 12 years with no maintenance at all on that belting, just over 1,100 hours on the machine.
