ECIL | IL biodiesel levels:
Illinois implements B20 biodiesel legislation

A law incentivizing the use of higher biodiesel blends in Illinois went into effect April 1.
The biodiesel B20 bill, passed in 2022, increases the biofuel blend levels necessary to receive a sales tax exemption every year until the blend reaches B20. The level increased on April 1 of this year from B11 to B14.
“Illinois is one of the few states that has this legislation or an incentive in place for biodiesel,” said Noelle Neef, Illinois Farm Bureau assistant director of energy. “We’re fortunate to have elected officials who support the use of biofuels.”
For the years to come, the blend level required to receive the exemption will increase as follows:
On April 1, 2025: Increases from B14 to B17.
On April 1, 2026: Increases from B17 to B20.
In the winter, defined by the legislation as Dec. 1 through March 31, Neef said the biodiesel blend required for the exemption will drop down to B10. She added, “This is because of the science behind biodiesel makeup and how it could react to colder weather.”
The sales tax exemption guidelines will run through 2032, remaining at the B20 threshold after 2026. According to Neef, the blend level changes should not have any effect on the cost of the product.
“You can start using blends higher than B14 now,” she said. “Higher blends are more primarily used by fuel providers, but this could impact diesel going in farmers’ tractors as well.”
